What the election means for your paternity leave. A look at the Manifestos.
What the election means for your paternity leave. A look at the Manifestos. At This Dad Can we’ve been deep in political manifestos, to give you a roundup of how your future paternity leave may be impacted by the general election.
Currently Paternity Leave consists of 1 or 2 weeks paid leave in the UK. This is stark contrast to Sweden offering 18 weeks, Iceland 12 weeks, Norway 10 weeks, Finland 8 weeks and Lithuania 4 weeks paid paternity leave.
However, if Liberal Democrats or Labour succeed at the 2017 General Election on 8th June this may change. According to their manifestoes, both have committed to increasing paternity leave. This is what their manifestos state on the topic:
LIB DEMS: “Extending free childcare to all two-year-olds and to the children of working families from the end of paid parental leave, and encouraging new fathers to take time off with an additional month’s paid paternity leave”.
LABOUR: “Double paid paternity leave to four weeks and increase paternity pay – because fathers are parents too and deserve to spend more time with their new babies”.
Despite the UK lagging behind our European neighbours; Conservatives, The Green Party, and UKIP does not mention Paternity Leave in their 2017 manifestos.
